I am the only person in my Spin Class that wears earplugs... I find that I can also hear what the instructor says better with them in... Glad to see I'm not alone. When people ask about them I say " I want to be able to hear when I'm 80" I am 33, and my husband and I wear them to concerts... But many don't.

Hi Christine. I agree, wholeheartedly:) The only thing I have seen specifically geared to women's heart health risks in Canada was the Heart & Stroke Foundation of Ontario's Make Death Wait Campaign that ran extensively in February. It may be off the air and out of print now, but it was terrific because it identified the specific risk for women: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=md3_wZb7gXY

So where do we go from here, Jane? How do we raise this awareness in our families, and our communities? You're so right that while Breast Cancer gets a lot of notice, women's heart problems do not. There is "Heart and Stroke Month", but there aren't specific events geared to raise money for women's heart-health research and treatment. Maybe it's time there was one. I know I'd support it, and so would many in my family.

Thanks for your comment Dawn; the summit is on my radar for April. There are also more Canadian resources about dealing with chronic pain at the Canadian Institute for the Relief of Pain and Disability.

Terrific article Jane. Canadian readers interested in this topic should also be aware of the Canadian Pain Summit being held in Ottawa April 21, 2012 to initiate and enforce National pain strategy for treatment of chronic pain.

Hi Susan,
Thanks for your comment, I'm glad you found my story helpful. I can't say for sure if your tinnitus will worsen even with ear protection, but I would suggest you discuss ear protection further with your doctor or ask for a referral to a hearing specialist who may be able to recommend a better earplug than the foam ones. I find the foam earplugs cut out enough decibels that the sound is in a comfortable range for me and yet I can still hear the fitness instructor's voice over the music. I use them for any class with loud music, whether it's a spinning or a body sculpt class. Foam earplugs are a little tricky to use, as you have to hold them for a minute or so until they expand properly in your ear canal to block the sound. Another idea is to ask the instructor to turn down the tunes - I bet you are not the only one who finds it way too loud. Good luck!

I was so very happy to find Jane Langille's article. I am a 64 year old grandmother who has smoked since age 12. I started Zumba classes in July of 2011 and have gone 2 days a week to zumba and 2 days to a shape and sculpt weight class. Both classes use loud music. They helped me to stop smoking, but a couple of weeks ago the tinnitus I have had since my 40's became so bad I thought I'd lose my mind! It was like someone cranked the volume on my buzzing. I hear it over the television, conversations, just about everything. It's so loud I can't sleep and have had to use sleep medication for the past few weeks. Since beginning the exercise classes, I would stuff Kleenex in my ears and have always used this method when at the movies or exposed to loud sounds. Then I began using foam earplugs when the tinnitus got so loud. My Dr. prescribed Nasonex as he thinks it is caused by fluid behind my eardrum - I don't agree. I think the tinnitus has worsened due to the music. Will the earplugs allow me to continue with the zumba? I'm so afraid the tinnitis will worsen even with ear protection, but I love the exercise. Would value your opinion on this. Thanks, Susan Foster - sandrfoster@aol.com

Thanks, Angela. It was great to hang out at WordCamp with fellow PWACers and thanks for answering my questions. Now the work begins to look into revising, trying different plugins and moving my site forward in time.

Thanks for the kind comments Virginia. I like your characterization of jellyfish as the "weedy species" of the ocean - very true.
