Hi Susan,
Thanks for your comment, I'm glad you found my story helpful. I can't say for sure if your tinnitus will worsen even with ear protection, but I would suggest you discuss ear protection further with your doctor or ask for a referral to a hearing specialist who may be able to recommend a better earplug than the foam ones. I find the foam earplugs cut out enough decibels that the sound is in a comfortable range for me and yet I can still hear the fitness instructor's voice over the music. I use them for any class with loud music, whether it's a spinning or a body sculpt class. Foam earplugs are a little tricky to use, as you have to hold them for a minute or so until they expand properly in your ear canal to block the sound. Another idea is to ask the instructor to turn down the tunes - I bet you are not the only one who finds it way too loud. Good luck!

I was so very happy to find Jane Langille's article. I am a 64 year old grandmother who has smoked since age 12. I started Zumba classes in July of 2011 and have gone 2 days a week to zumba and 2 days to a shape and sculpt weight class. Both classes use loud music. They helped me to stop smoking, but a couple of weeks ago the tinnitus I have had since my 40's became so bad I thought I'd lose my mind! It was like someone cranked the volume on my buzzing. I hear it over the television, conversations, just about everything. It's so loud I can't sleep and have had to use sleep medication for the past few weeks. Since beginning the exercise classes, I would stuff Kleenex in my ears and have always used this method when at the movies or exposed to loud sounds. Then I began using foam earplugs when the tinnitus got so loud. My Dr. prescribed Nasonex as he thinks it is caused by fluid behind my eardrum - I don't agree. I think the tinnitus has worsened due to the music. Will the earplugs allow me to continue with the zumba? I'm so afraid the tinnitis will worsen even with ear protection, but I love the exercise. Would value your opinion on this. Thanks, Susan Foster - sandrfoster@aol.com

Thanks, Angela. It was great to hang out at WordCamp with fellow PWACers and thanks for answering my questions. Now the work begins to look into revising, trying different plugins and moving my site forward in time.

Thanks for the kind comments Virginia. I like your characterization of jellyfish as the "weedy species" of the ocean - very true.

Jane - this is a both a haunting and touching story. Haunting because jellyfish are the weedy species of the ocean and who would expect to find a swarm of them in the cold, clear waters off Newfoundland? And touching because of the interactions with your son along the way. Well done.

Thanks for your comment, Virginia. Let me know if this works for your family too. Since writing this post, I notice that there is a new President's Choice detergent called MAX Sport, but I'm reluctant to try it. It contains eucalyptus oil "for maximum odour-fighting protection" , claiming to be "perfect for washing activewear and sports gear", but I wonder if it would rinse out or leave residue. Besides, who wants to smell like vapo-rub or a sore throat lozenge?
